Movies With Killer Soundtracks I
By Jillianne Hamilton
(06/01/09)
Some of these movies were... well, it doesn't matter. But their soundtracks were awesome. And that's what this series of articles is about. For more info on these
movies/soundtracks, click on an album cover.
The Tracey Fragments (2007), starring Ellen Page, is a dark, non-linear movie with lots of split-screen effects- and a brilliant soundtrack. Five of the 11 tracks, including a couple epic
instrumentals, are by Canadian indie mega-band Broken Social Scene. Other artists on the album include Slim Twig (who has a part in the movie as well),
Duchess Says, FemBots and Highlights include "Horses" (Broken Social Scene) and Rose Melburg's "Each New Day".
The soundtrack to Marie Antoinette (2006) is simply fun. Made up of 1980s goodies. No, Queen Marie wasn't around in the '80s but these tracks were chosen to give the movie a modern feel- and it works!
The album does include some period music but generally, the album is dominated by names like New Order, The Cure, Siouxsie and the Banshees,
Bow Wow Wow and Adam and the Ants. Although not 1980s music, "What Ever Happened" by The Strokes is awesome.
Across The Universe (2007) is my favorite movie. I'm not going to lie. I thought it was magically delicious. But the soundtrack is epic. But what's even more epic than
the standard soundtrack is the deluxe version- more songs=more awesomeness. My favorite covers of these Beatles gems are Dana Fuchs' "Helter Skelter",
Joe Anderson's "I Want You (She's So Heavy)", T.V. Carpio's "I Want To Hold Your Hand", "Something" by Jim Sturgess and (my favorite Beatles song ever)
"While My Guitar Gently Weeps" by Martin Luther McCoy.
Until next time, keep watching and listening!
