Molly Thomason: Not Wasting Any Time
By Jillianne Hamilton
(08/07/09)

MOLLY THOMASON I was listening to the East Coast Countdown the other day when Molly Thomason's catchy, romantic pop tune "Kiss Me" came on. Despite her mature, unwavering and easy-on-the-ears vocals, Thomason is only 14. (I know, right?! That's impressive!) The following is a Q&A with the little miss who made it into the big bad music industry.

So, how are things?
Things are going very well for me, thanks! I just got back from Shelburne yesterday where I opened for a young piano player/singer-songwriter called Alex Buchanan and as soon as I got home I got to play at a beautiful lighthouse out in Arisaig.

You’re from Antigonish. What grade are you in at school?
Yes, right now we live in Antigonish. I’m about to start grade ten at Dr. John Hugh Gillis Regional High.

Bringing out a record is a dream for a lot of people and you’ve managed to do it at such a young age. How do you feeling about the record itself?
Well, of course I’m really excited about it. So much work went into it that to look at the final copy is exactly that, like a dream. I feel pretty amazed when I hear it and think of how much effort was put into even the tiniest details.

What kind of feedback have you received on the album so far?
It seems like people are really enjoying it. It got a nice review from Stephen Cooke in the Chronicle Herald the week it came out and the first single “Kiss Me” is getting lots of radio play. So, I think people are liking it so far. Kids in my class do anyway- haha.

Did you write all the songs on the record? Who helped you with the song-writing?
Yes, every song is an original which I wrote by myself. Whenever I write something I’ll play it for Mom and Dad to get feedback. They’re great listeners and tell me the (sometimes blunt) truth.

What was it like to actually record the album?
Oh, my God- it was amazing!!! It was so much fun. I recorded at Feswick Productions just outside Liverpool with producer/engineer Tim Feswick. It was so fun. Tim didn’t treat me like a kid or anything like that. In his eyes, I was just another recording artist and that’s how I was treated. It was great. Sometimes it got a bit annoying to do so many vocal tracks and at one point I really hated the song “Streetfight” because I was playing it over and over again! haha. It was definitely a lot of hard work for me and especially for Tim, but it was worth it all the way.

You’re a fresh face in the music business. How do you feel about it so far?
So far, it’s really good. People are nice to me and seem to be taking me seriously. It’s a bit nerve-wracking to apply for certain things because there are a lot of politics involved in the music world and sometimes being a new artist at a young age can be a disadvantage- I know I have to wait my turn for certain opportunities.

When you’re not singing songs and writing music, what do you enjoy doing in your spare time?
Oh gosh- what spare time? Haha. Well, mostly I just chill, you know? Hang out with friends, go to the movies, read. Facebook, of course! But really in my spare time I’m playing guitar and singing anyway and if I’m not doing it in my spare time I’m doing it at a show or something like that. Music has always been the center of my life and I’m not complaining!

What’s next for you?
This summer I’m doing as many shows as I can. I played at Stanfest and Harmony Bazaar. I’ll be doing Riverfest in a few weeks! Once the year starts up, it’s all a matter of the balancing act between school and my career. I’d like to do a high school tour of the east coast, but we’ll have to see whether or not that’s going to be possible.
