NS Music Week: Jenn Grant
By Jillianne Hamilton
(11/03/09)

JENN GRANT Yup, Nova Scotia Music Week is upon us once again! Jenn Grant is nominated for 2 awards: Album of the Year and Female Artist Recording for Echoes, released earlier this year. Echoes is Grant's 2nd full-length album. Her first, Orchestra for the Moon was released in 2007 to much critical acclaim.

Echoes is just about the most beautiful, ethereal and poetic album I’ve heard in a long time. What inspires your music? What other artists do you listen to when looking for inspiration?
First of all, thank you! I am inspired by my own life, with a lot of imagination and feelings mixed in. I like to look at songs as a picture or a painting which maybe is not the best way to get on commercial radio, but hey. It works for me. This year we have started a nice record collection. I love listening to old records at home and am currently on the hunt for some Patsy Cline. I love a lot of music. Sigur Ros, Kathleen Edwards, Radiohead, Fleet Foxes.... and I love going to concerts. This week we saw Patrick Watson in NYC and it was very inspiring.

Which is a bigger honour, nomination-wise: “Album of the Year” or “Female Artist Recording”? Why?
They are both lovely. I feel very proud of all the women in my life who are also singer/songwriters and that I love, as well as being continuously inspired by albums coming out of the east coast.

What are some things you keep in mind when you start writing a song? And which comes first for you, the lyrics or the melody?
The lyrics and the melody have always come together, but it's interesting to try new approaches to songwriting, which is what I'm trying to do this year.

Besides your own work, what other nominated artists/albums are you rooting for?
I'm a big Joel Plaskett fan but I'm not sure he needs any help for me! I also have a lot of admiration for Ryan MacGrath and Erin Costello. I love my In-Flight Safety men, and others! But I'm keeping this short.

Anything you’d like to add about the album or NS Music Week?
I'm happy this album is being honored in this way, It was a real "labour of love" from myself and my band. I love the weekend away just to see friends and it always makes me feel part of a big family.
