NS Music Week: Joel Plaskett
By Jillianne Hamilton
(11/06/09)

JOEL PLASKETT Yup, Nova Scotia Music Week is upon us once again! Joel Plaskett is nominated for 6 awards: Bell Aliant Entertainer of the Year, Album of the Year, Male Artist Recording, Pop/Rock Artist/Group Recording, SOCAN Songwriter of the Year and Video of the Year for Three, released earlier this year. Three is a CD-3 album featuring 27 songs and the backing vocals of Ana Egge and Rose Cousins.

First off, how are things?
Things are going well. I'm really busy but I'm enjoying myself. I'm producing a record for David Myles right now.

You've done a lot of touring and traveling this year. The Polaris awards, Nova Scotia Music Week and, next month, the Canadian Folk Music Awards. For you, how does NS Music Week differ from these other events?
It's great to get to smaller communities in Nova Scotia and the awards provide that opportunity. I've never played Yarmouth with the exception of strumming my guitar at Camp Wapomeo as a teenager. The other great thing about NSMW is that lots of my friends will be there.

While you're traveling to and from all these events and award shows, what do you listen to in your vehicle?
I often drive in silence. Sometimes I listen to old dictaphone tapes for ideas I've forgotten. When I'm spinning records, I'm digging Ann Peebles and Otis Clay right now. Anything on Hi Records from 1970-75.

You're nominated in several categories this year, including Bell Aliant Entertainer of the Year and Album of the Year. Are there any nominations that you are especially proud of?
I'm really happy with Three and thrilled that it's nominated. I love entertaining so Entertainer of the Year is a cool one.

Do you have any particular favourite artists among your fellow nominees?
I really like Classified, Jenn Grant, Erin Costelo, Dog Day, but the list goes on...

The video for "Through & Through & Through" is nominated for Video of the Year. Tell us a little bit about the making of that video.
We shot it in Nova Scotia in one day. Mostly up the Eastern shore and Peggy's Cove. It was a lot of fun, although it was a little chilly out if I remember. I got to ride in a lot of vehicles I'd never been in. Motorcycle sidecar, ATV, racing canoe...

Three was obviously a huge undertaking. Do you think you'd ever consider attempting a similar project again? (If so, what would you do differently? If not, do you have any plans for your next album?)
I doubt I'd make a triple record again. It was a lot of work. If I had it to do over, I wouldn't record it in the summer. It was hot in the studio and I didn't see the sunshine as much as I'd like. Maybe I'll write a musical someday. I'm thinking my next record may be a covers album called "By All the Girls I've Loved Before." Songs that I love by women.

Ana Egge, Rose Cousins and Papa Plaskett made wonderful contributions to Three. If you could chose a couple other musicians to work with on an album, who would they be and why?
I'd love to duet with Martha Wainwright and have Nick Lowe produce it. I love Martha's voice and attitude and I think Nick Lowe has great taste and talent.

You mention wine 5 times on Three. What's your favourite kind of wine?
Red. Primativo grapes are good...

Anything to add about the album or NS Music Week?
It's very cool to be invited and that the album has been so well-received. It's great to be acknowleded by my community. That's something I never want to take for granted.
