NS Music Week: Rebekah Higgs
By Jillianne Hamilton
(11/01/09)

RUBY JEAN AND THE THOUGHTFUL BEES Yup, Nova Scotia Music Week is upon us once again! Ruby Jean and the Thoughtful Bees, fronted by ECMA-nominated singer Rebekah Higgs, are nominated for 4 awards: Alternative Artist/Group Recording, Group Recording, New Artist/Group Recording of the Year and Jazz/Electro/Acoustic Artist/Group Recording for their self-titled album, released earlier this year.

Congratulations on your NS Music Week nominations. Are there any that especially stand out for you?
I think the New Music category is the one I am most proud about/care the greatest about. I think as a band we have really worked hard in our first official year since the album came out and have done so much touring in Canada (which is a enormous country!) and the UK. We are all pleasantly exhausted, broke and in love with one another. If we won that award, I could come home from the UK and sleep for a month with a smile on my face.

Ruby Jean and the Thoughtful Bees have been touring a lot for several months. What was that like?
Amazing. The tour with Dragonette was mind-blowing. We loved the other band and played to a full room every night. What more could you ask for? It's been great to play so much as a band and really understand each other on stage as musicians.

If you could define the RJATTB style in 10 words or less, what would it be?
Underground, sexy musicianship ready to pounce in leather and sequins.

Can we expect another solo album from you any time in the future? And, if so, what can fans look forward to with that?
Yes! I am very excited to be working with Brian Deck (Modest Mouse, Iron and Wine) in the new year. I can't wait to get back into the recording studio. My new album is going to be extending from what I already did with my first record and delving deeper into the psychedelic side of my music. I recorded an EP this summer for my friend's film soundtrack and that was amazing. But I am a studio/recording junkie and I need more!

Anything you’d like to add about the album or NS Music Week?
It's a bummer we have to miss Music Week because we will be in the UK- but I know everyone will be having a blast. I'm just sorry I won't be able to smash sh!t and get drunk with the lot of you (like last year). Hang off a ceiling fixture in my honor! xox
