Charlottetown Record Store Owner Plans to Rock Until He’s 80
By Jaclyn Crawford
(10/09/08)

PAT DEIGHAN As a kid, he would sit in front of his 8-track stereo and listen to Tanya Tucker, Grease and Elvis, recalls Pat Deighan while working at Back Alley Music.

Deighan is a music guru. He is the manager of a local record shop, which caters to the vinyl and local variety, as well as modern music. He also plays guitar in his band Pat Deighan and the Orb Weavers.

Deighan is at Back Alley everyday, guiding customers towards the record that will suit their mood, and never lacks an opinion or information on a piece of music in the store.

He says that the best part of being the manager is just getting to sit all day, and talk to customers about music.

Ironically, the worst part of managing the store is all of the great music that comes in constantly. Deighan, an avid record collector, finds it hard to resist some of the amazing albums that find their way to the store.

“But you can’t break the bank,” he says.

Many bands and albums have influenced Deighan throughout his life. From the Pixies who “at 16 really blew me away,” he said, to the BeatlesWhite Album.

“That album made me realize you can do anything with an album.”

He also said that he would love to have been able to play in a band with John Lennon, because he was such an amazing writer.

“He’s amazing all around.”

Deighan plays guitar in his band, but he also plays drums, and is learning to play mandolin (he knows four chords already).

He started playing guitar before he was a teenager. It was always something he wanted to do, so he learned with the goal of having a real band with his friends (the air guitar act got old pretty quickly).

Of course, Deighan wants his band to be successful, but being a realist he knows that it is hard to make a living being a rock star. However, he doesn’t see that stopping his band anytime soon.

“We will be cranking the rock tunes until we are 80 years old,” he said.
