Joel Plaskett: Beatnik Poetry On The Fly By Jillianne Hamilton
(07/27/09)
"I drove an hour, Joel, but I'd drive ten for you!!"
This was shouted from an eager audience member during the recent performance of Joel Plaskett (ft. David Myles) at the Dr. Carson & Marion Murray Community Centre in Springhill, Nova Scotia.
Myles, who played an exquisite opening act, made a comment about having never played in a hockey arena before. Springhill, Nova Scotia doesn't get many big musical names so the hockey arena was the best venue the small town had to offer.
(Joel said it had good acoustics. And that's good enough for me.)
My first live Joel Plaskett experience was on April 21st, 2009. I saw him at the Confederation Centre. It was a wonderful show so I was worried that this show in Springhill wouldn't live up to it.
But it did. I can't believe I ever doubted you, Joel.
We all sang along to his new songs and classic tracks and screamed when he came back for an encore, playing requests for the audience, "True Patriot Love", "Fashionable People" and "Drunk Teenagers". He was a huge hit. Springhill truly appreciated him being there, and that was nice to see.
I think everyone should see Plaskett live at least once in their life. He's quirky and charming and spits out random rhymes and lines between choruses and verses, beatnik poetry on the fly.
(And in a related story, I now have a signed Three vinyl. Feel free to express blind jealousy.)
