Milks & Rectangles - Civic Virtues
By Jillianne Hamilton

The Charlottetown music scene fails to disappoint me. Another stellar album from a PEI band has been released onto the streets, its groovy beats permeating into the red soil. This album is Civic Virtues, the debut release of Milks and Rectangles.
(Ugh. I can't believe I just used the phrase "groovy beats." Gross.)
From beginning to end, Civic Virtues is an indie pop fan's dream come true, wrapped in tissue paper of interesting lyrics and tied together with a guitar string.
The obvious highlights of the 6-track EP are "Heart's The Target", "Armchair General" and "Titling at Windmills." But each track is great on its own. "Heart's The Target" is simply killer- very Franz Ferdinand-ish, very dancey and very fresh. (I expect this to be a new favorite for the Indie Pop Night crowd.)
"Slander Debunked" is an interesting track. It's not one of my favorites, in all honesty, but it earns some major points with an incredible chorus that reminds me of an Arcade Fire song. Things turn a little shozegaze with the final track, "Motel Fire Drill"- but I'm not complaining. However, I'd have to say the best tracks on the album are the ones that put the guitar front and center.
This is one of those albums that should make it to your iPod- and not just one or two tracks. I can't wait to see (and hear!) what the Milks and Rectangles do next.
Listen to a sample of "Heart's The Target."
