Molly Thomason - Through The Static
By Jillianne Hamilton

MOLLY THOMASON - Through The Static For a debut album, this is certainly an impressive attempt. Antigonish singer/songwriter Molly Thomason doesn't sound like any 14-year-old I've ever heard. Mature, thoughtful lyrics and inviting guitar melodies fill this 11-track record.

And the girl writes all her own music. So that's pretty cool, too.

The album highlights are, without a doubt, "Kiss Me", "Streetfight", "Sister Sarah" and "One Anthem Girl." The album suddenly takes a sudden turn with the faster, edgier "Break My Heart." But I'm not complaining- the track is damn catchy. The record then adds some old-fashioned twang with "Summer Rain."

"Sister Sarah" is definitely one of my favorite tracks, a tale of a witchy character. It's faster, fun and Thomason slips effortlessly between high vocals and the rough-but-bouncy chorus.

"One Anthem Girl" is a great song too. Nice, gentle build-up and then an unexpected rock chorus with hella cool guitar and drums behind Thomason's teenage angsty vocals. Love, love, love that one. Kudos to a girl who can handle rock and quiet folky pop.

The detail that struck me the most about Through The Static is that it just doesn't seem like a debut CD. It seems like it should be in a collection of a seasoned recording artist who's been doing this for years.

I look forward to seeing what Thomason comes up with next. Writing love songs is only going to get more complicated when the girl is old enough to drive.
