The Novaks - Things Fall Apart
By Jillianne Hamilton
(07/05/09)
There's something greasy, vintage and very enjoyable about the newest album from Newfoundland rockers, The Novaks. It reminds me of the good old days of rock 'n roll. Y'know, the type that was around before I was born.
Mick Davis' vocals are definitely alluring. His voice and the album have got an appealing, masculine quality to them. Most of the tracks could easily be used to advertise guy-ish stuff like, I don't know, motorcycles. Or Levi's. Or something equally sexy.
(Wow. Just realized what a weird paragraph that was. But my point is still valid.)
There's something very Mick Jaggery about "Under Those Wheels". (Ooh. Jaggery. Good word.) I had the chorus in my head for days- but I didn't mind because it's quite a cool tune.
Other highlights include "There Goes The Night", "Billy The Kid", "Worm In The Apple" and "Rain Rain Rain".
In conclusion, a stellar album with a ripped-blue-jeans style of rock.
