Racoon Bandit - Campcraft
By Ryan Conway

RACOON BANDIT - Campcraft After listening to Campcraft, the debut album from PEI’s own Racoon Bandit, I can’t help but feel a tad disappointed- only because it left me wanting more.

The disc starts off with "Train Song," a nice soft and pleasant tune that is ideal for mellowing out. Ironically enough, I can picture myself listening to this as I’m travelling. Perhaps while on a train.

The gentle nature of the opening number could be a tad misleading, as the second track, "Bloody Bone" hits the listener’s eardrum hard like a thundering blast and it’s awesome. The guitar work is simply outstanding and sets the tone for the entire song and the old-fashioned sound of the vocals really adds to the haunting atmosphere.

I also like the story the song presents. It’s very reminiscent of old folk songs and blues music, just with a modern day twist. I also thought the addition of Meghan Blanchard to the back up vocals was a nice touch.

What is most unique about the album is that it provides a good balance in both musical styles presented above. With "Hat" and "Dirty Road" tearing down the house and "Same Old Boat" and "Ghosts" allowing you to relax and catch your breath.

The album’s final track, "Long Ride Home" is a beautiful piece of music. The keyboard used very well and the soft vocals echoing in the background is an excellent scene setter. I also liked the raindrops falling in the background. It’s the little things that makes this track a cut above the rest.

This EP leaves a strong impression and shows a lot of promise for a possible full length album in the future.
